Interest Approach Lab Reflection

This week our lab was on our interest approach. I thought this lab was so fun to plan! My activity was a lead into a dairy science introductory unit. They students were directed to come up with their own dairy breed. This involved naming the breed. They also were instructed to name the breed, decide the size, personality traits, and dairy characteristics. Lastly, they were also asked to color and design their cow using their own creativity. I thought this cow activity was a fun way to start this unit and get their thoughts flowing. During lab, this activity seemed to go over well with my peers. I also thought this activity was easily flexible as I could vary it depending on how much time we had. I also had the idea that at the end of the activity a few students could voluntarily share. This could build the students confidence and build a short public speaking chance into the activity. I think it is very important to wander around the room and personally talk to each student and make sure they understand, that is a gem I believe I did well.

Some feedback so far I have received on my lesson is that it may be based more towards younger, ninth grade students. I do agree with this. The younger students may be more willing to do this activity. I believe though that if you create enough excitement, the older students may also find this activity entertaining and fun. This activity is also one you probably would only want to use once as the students could easily get bored of an activity like this if it got repeated often. Overall, I think this interest approach could be a lot of fun in the classroom seeing what the students could create!

  1. I said this in your video on Edthena as well but I love this idea! I agree that it may be geared toward younger students but even I (as a peer) wanted to do this. I kind of always imagined my own things when I was younger and created stuff like a new breed (it was usually a cow world, hence my gmail account) Haha :) That's just me personally; geeking out because of cows (and creating new things in general)!
This will also definitely get the students into the right mindset for learning about cows and even what makes a breed a breed in general!

  2. Brooke, I thought your idea was very creative! I agree with you, if you create enough excitement, all students will be excited to participate! I mean, who doesn't like to color?

  3. Brooke, I like how you explained the design of this activity as well as what you could do to make it applicable to different ag student audiences. Make sure to clearly identify both gems and your opp for each week to aid in clarity of your reflection process. Nice job this week!

  4. Brooke, I LOVE that you went and individually talked with your students. This is KEY to making them feel head, valued, etc. AND to also make sure that your students are working on the task at hand. I love how creative this was!
