Week 4

The first Ted talk we listened to this week really hit me. For one, the speaker was a 17 year old girl who was extremely brave. This stood out to me because the topic of her speech was about getting heard even at a young age. This is a talk that we need to remember in our classrooms. She talks about how students have very little say in schools, such as what they learn or how but yet they are still forced to know all the material. This is the main reason we should make learning fun in our classrooms! In ag classrooms, we have the ability to base our learning towards our students wants and needs. If we have a students who have an interest in alpacas, we have the ability to incorporate a lesson on them and allow and encourage them to pursue their curiosity in this area! Even in the lessons that students may not be as interested in, we need to find fun ways to teach these lessons so the students do not resist learning.

The second ted talk also meant a lot to me. We must make sure every student that walks through our door knows that they matter and are important. It is essential that we get to know our students so they can realize that we do care about them. The typical "get to know you" activities on the first day may get boring for students but we can use these as little tid bits to start conversations with our students early on and ease into a relationship where they feel comfortable in our classrooms. This is also such an important thing to have in life. Letting people know they matter and that you care about them could actually save someone's life. In our classrooms and in life in general, you never know what someone is going through, dealing with, or how they feel. It is so essential to just be kind.

  1. Brooke, you bring up two very important things to remember when teaching: student ownership of their learning and student rapport. Allowing students to have a stake in their learning and giving them a voice can be a game changer for the culture of your classroom community. For this to occur, rapport needs to be authentically established and maintained. Remember, "nobody cares how much you know until they know how much you care."

    Two suggestions:
    1) Think about entitling blogs in a more descriptive way beyond "week 4" so that they have meaning to you in 6 months.

    2) You could consider linking/embedding the YouTube Videos of the Ted Talks to create a more valuable "archive" for you and making it easier for your virtual mentor team to watch/get with you!
