Problem Solving Lab Reflection

Related imageThis week was a super fun one in lab! We covered problem solving with our "students". For me, this lab was certainly a challenge but it was also very exciting and interesting to complete. In my lab, we used a role playing activity. Our problem was the secretary of an organization asked them to pick their top three recommendations for helping to increase the food supply or our growing environment  from a list they provided. In the activity we made a pro and cons list of each and then came together to pick which methods we recommend to the organization. This was used to summarize and wrap up a plant science unit. Overall, I thought this activity went very well and was actually quite fun. We completed this activity as a whole group but it could also of been done as individuals or in small groups. I liked doing it as a class but I also really liked that I had them do some individual thinking at the end as well. From the list we were working from, I believe it could definitely be used to "test" the students knowledge on how much they learned during the unit.

There are a few things I would like to change or did not like how I taught during this lesson. I definitely would want to study up more before doing this activity but actually working through this few week lesson with students before would of changed this greatly. It also really through me off when a student asked about my personal life. It was very hard to handle and I believe I probably could of handled it better but the question made it very hard for me to focus on the lesson after it was asked. Lastly, I would like to find a way to make this specific activity more interactive for the students. I think it would be great to find a way to get the students up and moving during this lesson. Overall, I think this really would be an activity to incorporate in my future classroom and one that my students and myself would enjoy completing.

  1. Brooke, great reflection of your lab this week! Thank you for providing a description of the problem you used. You do a nice job sharing both your gems and opps, and what you would do to improve on your opps for the next time you taught this lesson. Good job!

  2. Brooke, I really enjoyed reading about your gems and opps! I also felt that I would need to adjust my problem-solving approach plan when I teach it to high school students.
