Week 8- Assessment

There are many benefits of assessing. These are benefits for both the student and the teacher. There is also multiple ways to assess. Assessment is mainly done to see what the students have learned. This helps the teacher see what they taught effectively, where their students are at and possibly what they need to reteach. For students, this could demonstrate what they need to focus on studying or what they should ask their teach to clarify. Through assessment, you can also see if certain teaching strategies were effective or not. For example, if an entire class did terrible on an exam the teacher can assume they did not teach the lesson appropriately and should probably go back and teach the information in a different way. If the class as a whole did well, and there was just a few outlier students, the teacher could assume their lesson was effective and some students possibly just were not focusing or having an off day on test day. Testing can be done in a variety of ways. These include multiple choice, true or false, short answer, matching and essay are the most popular.  It is so extremely important to use a variety of assessment to not only keep students interested or not bored but to also work with students needs. Every student is unique and some ways to assess could make students more nervous where others could be much easier for them. As teachers, it is extremely important to thrive to help our students do the best they can possibly do.

Through our readings this week, I learned the difference between summative and formative assessment. Summative is where you assess the students at the end of a lesson and see how well the students did compared to a standard that we have. Formative does not have to be done in a formal matter. These is done to see where the students are at and how they are learning. Both of these are very necessary to include when teaching. In my classroom, I hope to have a large variety of summative assessments and I hope to use formative assessments to have flexibility in my lessons and make sure the students are learning as much as possible.

  1. Brooke, I like that you stated you wanted to have a variety of summative assessments. I always think its cool how in education we have evolved farther than formal written tests. For instance, just at FLC we did a gallery walk as the "pre-test" to gain information of where they started and a Mock-meeting as a "post-test" so see how they could apply their learning.

  2. Brooke, I like how you emphasize the importance of assessment and how it can be used in the classroom. It is good to see that you want to use both formative and summative with your students, and that you plan to use a variety of assessment tools to keep things interesting and fresh for you and your students. Which types of assessment did you learn about in the readings that you think would be most useful for you to use in the ag classroom?

  3. Brooke, I love the graphic of the assessment cycle! It's important as teachers that we not just test and grade, but reflect and change.
