Week 12- Literacy Strategies

For our assignment this week, we were instructed to research literacy strategies. There are so many out there that you could easily use a different one every time! Having so many different strategies for retaining reading is very important for students though. All students learn uniquely in their own ways. A strategy that works great for one student may be very ineffective for another. That is why it is necessary and extremely important to use variety in your lessons.

Some of the strategies I found that I would use in my classroom are:
activating prior knowledge
context clues
think aloud
making predictions
visualization
graphic organizers
Brainstorming
Drawing
Metaphors, Analogies, and Similes
Mnemonic Devices
Music, Rhythm, Rhyme, and Rap
movement

My favorite of these would be movement and visuals. Movement is very fun for students. For a specific word or topic they can create a movement or body symbol to help them remember and better understand. Visualization is also done the same way except they are drawing a picture or symbol to connect too. Prior knowledge is also one I believe is the most effective. This helps the students to better connect to the topic and can better their memory of it.

Literacy strategies are important to ag classrooms as they help to better retain and understand information. Agriculture is a topic that connects all other subjects such as reading, science, math and writing. Having these strategies will help in all areas and not just in our classroom walls.

Comments

  1. Brooke, I like how you identified 3 key literacy strategies that you thought would be most effective for your students, and how you share the way you could use each one. As you already know, variability is key, and switching up your literacy strategies can help keep things interesting and will help you find which work best for you students. Of the strategies you shared in the list, which do you think will be the most challenging to implement and how do you plan to make it successful?
