WE ARE Finally Student Teaching!
After anticipating student teaching in the Wellsboro agriculture class for over a year, I am finally in the classroom! My first week of student teaching consisted of two days of teacher in service time and two days with students. Getting to experience the teachers very first day after summer break was just as exciting as getting to welcome the students in on their first day!
If I was not nervous, anxious, and excited enough on my first day heading into school, the retiree welcoming committee standing along the sidewalks ringing bells, yelling, and smiling at all the incoming teachers was certainly enough to make it official. BUT, we were able to share that feeling with the students as the teachers did the same thing to them as they arrived on their first day. (Truly the high schoolers were less than impressed but the youngsters frantically waving and smiling back on the passing buses totally made it worth it!)
I currently am only four days in but I am so thankful for my placement. Mrs. B has already passed along so much knowledge and wisdom that I am not quite sure how my brain is going to hold it all by the end of the semester. A highlight for me was the fact that she did not do typical first day tasks such as going over the syllabus, corny name games or boringly passing out textbooks. In all eight of our classes, we did different thinking and problem solving activities to get the student's brains working! The students definitely seemed shocked and happy that we postponed the syllabus reading.
Another highlight already experienced was sitting in on a very large IEP meeting for a student. All teachers from every course the student is taking, along with the child's parent, aids, special education teacher and school principle were all in attendance. Although, it was quite an intense meeting it was great to see all the faculty coming together to meet the best needs of this student.
Next week, we will be jumping into our first full week of school and getting into a normal routine. I am looking forward to getting the students adjusted to the classroom again and starting in on their official lessons.
