Homecoming Week!
This week was full of trying to learn to balance crazy schedules and leaving sub plans for the first time! Wellsboro goes crazy homecoming week! During the day, they do many activities in the afternoons like powder puff football, game shows, and pep rallies. This week we also had an act 80 day, giving us three days with half day or shortened schedules! It is fantastic that they make this such a big deal and something fun for the students. After school this week, they had a bonfire and a carnival for the public and then of course the parade before the football game.
We not only had all this going on in school but we also had our first FFA competition! We traveled to Westfield with 36 students who competed in soils, forestry and wildlife against students from four other schools in our area. It was super exciting to see the students putting the knowledge that we just gave them in the classroom to real use! Many of them kept saying they had no idea what they were doing and were confused but the same kids that said this I saw their papers and they had the right answers or were really close! My favorite was a student that during class kept saying this was pointless to learn but when we got to the competition I saw she had memorized all the rules and classes for the front side of her scorecard and got the correct answer! I told her she may of thought it was useless but it will help her someday and she was really good at it! This trip was also really beneficial for myself as I got to ask the other ag teachers how they taught these topics and listen to their tips that they give to their students to help them at the contest. While I was stationed at a soil pit another teacher walked me through each section of the scorecard and gave me super helpful tips to help the students learn and understand it better. This was super helpful!
Due to this field trip, I had to create plans and activities that I could leave for a substitute. Tucker also became very sick at school and I had to go pick him up early one day. I had to write plans down last minute so Mrs. B knew exactly what I had planned for that day and make sure she was prepared for the classes. I definitely learned and realized the more detailed you can be is more helpful for the person subbing. Especially if you have someone that is not familiar with the school, you not only need to leave directions of what the students need to do but you also need to include supplies and locations as well. The more detailed these plans are the better and more helpful and I can definitely improve on writing these.
