Oops! Try Again

What a learning week!

This week, I had my first lesson go terribly wrong! HA! When I mean this went bad, it blew up. Total Catastrophe. So, this lesson happened with my introduction to agriculture class (poor ag newbies). I was attempting to teach an introduction to tree measurement. The main focus was on diameter using a tape and a Biltmore stick. I wanted to focus on making sure each student understood what they were doing individually but as I learned this left to much free time for the other students who were not practicing with me at the moment. After a discussion after class, I changed my lesson for the afternoon to be small group activities where they can practice and I could work with each small group as well. This went much better the second time! During Mr. Seamon's visit, the first time I taught it went well but he did provide me with a few tips that I used the second time I taught the lesson in the afternoon and these tips also made the lesson better! Learning experience was there is definitely going to be lessons that go awfully wrong but learning how to adapt them is part of teaching. I believe this also demonstrated that the more we teach the more we will learn to adapt and become more confident in our lessons and knowing what will and will not work.

This week was also a major eye opening week for understanding students. I had my first discipline issue with a student and a cell phone. She definitely tested boundaries but in the end I do believe I handled it well. She did this in the middle of my biggest class of underclassmen when Mrs. B was away on a field trip. I believe I did handle it well as she did listen to me and this definitely will set a tone for the other students that I will not allow them to get away with things. I also had to report my first student this day. She said very scary things about not wanting to live as well as endangering others in the school. This was super nerve wracking to do but I was super thankful our principle is understanding. She also assured me this was the right thing to do and filled me in on this student and how we should be keeping an eye on them. There were quite a few other situations this week that also demonstrated that kids really struggle at home. We have talked about this so much in our teaching classes but seeing it first hand is quite sad and really shows the importance of knowing your students and being there for them.

Overall, this was such a learning week! Tears were definitely shed but I definitely will remember this week and use all the knowledge, tips and experiences I learned.
