Getting the First Times Done
Friday was definitely the day that stood out the most last week! As Mrs. B was away for an FFA event, I was in substitute and student teaching mode! This was definitely an experience to remember!
This was my first time in a role as a substitute teacher. This definitely gave me a whole new perspective. First, it makes me want to go back and apologize to every substitute that I ever had in high school! Mostly though, it demonstrated how hard this role actually is. Luckily for me, I understood what the classes were doing and was there when there assignments were initially assigned and explained to them. This was still difficult in some ways as I knew that the way I did things or the things I told them may not be exactly how Mrs. B would have done it. I cannot imagine being someone with little agriculture experience having to substitute in an agriculture classroom! This surely would be even more difficult.
Friday was also my first time ever teaching all periods during the school day. I was thankful that Mrs. B had everything planned and set up so well or this definitely could have been overwhelming. This definitely displayed why it is so important for teachers to have prep periods! I am still getting used to there being eight classes in one school day! "Back when I was in high school" I had four classes for longer amount of times. I have not decided yet which I like more.
Having this role for the day was definitely eye opening. I learned I need to get better and more confident with classroom management strategies. My students were mostly well behaved but I did have one class that got pretty sassy and rowdy. This happened to also be my biggest class! I was also very shocked to discover that some of our FFA members definitely showed different personalities when the teacher they are used too was not around. This showed it is extra important to really get to know your students and members.
Overall, this experience will certainly be one I remember and one I learned a lot about myself as a teacher during.
