Pick One Assignment- Interview
For my "pick one" activity, I chose to complete an interview with Wellsboro School District's superintendent, Dr. Brenda Freeman. This mock interview was so much fun! Dr. Freeman is such a kind lady and gave me an enormous amount of advice and tips when interviewing for a teaching position. I feel as if I was prepared for the majority of the questions she asked. I have already done a few job interviews and previous AEE assignments, so I feel as if these really prepared me for another mock interview. Some of the questions she did ask me were unique and did make me think a little more but I enjoyed this.
The interview started by her asking me questions that she would typically ask someone interviewing for any teaching position. After she asked questions, we would discuss them and she told me why they ask specific question and what answers they are looking. One question we discussed a lot was, "What do you do for extracurriculars and have you helped coach or volunteer for any organizations." She said this one of the most important questions to her because she looks to hire teachers that are going to add to the community and the student environment within the school. She wants to hire teachers that are willing to help and volunteer to help students outside of just teaching as well. Another question she asked me was, "why do you want to teach specifically in this district?" I thought this question was actually really tough and her and I laughed about it at first. She explained as a knew teacher she totally understands applying for a lot of jobs in hopes to just find a place to get started and experience. But, she said she is looking to hire people who have a strong reason to want to be in her district because she is hoping for long lasting commitment as well as teachers who are going to become great members of the local community. She wants to see they actually researched the school to learn about what they were getting involved in. From this question, I will definitely make sure I research every school I apply to and dig deeper to know special and unique facts about the districts. One of the last questions she asked me was, "where do you see yourself in 5 years?" I instantly thought the answer she would be looking for would consist of something along the lines of teaching in the position I interviewed for. She said that, that is not always the case. She said obviously she is looking for someone who is going to stay in the district awhile but that does not always mean in the same classroom. She explained that she actually enjoys answers from teachers who are flexible and willing to move subjects if needed. She also said its always nice to hear candidates discuss that they would like to move up in the dsicitct and seek to be principals or any higher position.
I am really glad I had the opportunity to do this mock interview with Dr. Freeman. As an experienced superintendent, she has made a lot of hiring decisions and gave me great advice to use in interviews as I seek a teaching position in the future.
