SAE Visits

SAE Visit 1
For our first sae visit, we went to a local farm right outside of town and visited our student Kylie. Kylie is a very bubbly senior member who is also an officer of the chapter this year. Her sae is a placement project for raising beef to show at the fair. She is currently raising two Herefords and will pick which one she likes the best to take to fair. Her experience right now is special as she is also involved in school to work so she gets to spend extra time at the farm working with her animals and helping with the other beef cattle. To prepare for this, we asked Kylie when would be an appropriate and good time to visit and then Mrs. B and myself picked a good time that worked for all of us. When we arrived at the farm, we not only got to visit with Kylie, but the gentleman where she houses her animals as well as two of our other students that were there visiting. During the visit, we looked over her animals and had her tell us which one she was leaning towards showing at this point. She gave us some good reasons but we also encouraged her to really look them over as I believed at the current time, the one she picked would not place as well as the other one. We then talked to her about how she is caring for them and feed rations to ensure they make the appropriate weight. We then had the opportunity to ask her what she wishes to improve on from last year and some new goals she set for herself. A goal she stated was to work with her animals more so they would lead better for show. We also had an opportunity to ask the gentleman supervising her and her projects what his goals for her would be. He also stated he would like to see her spending more time putting them on a halter to calm them down. Mrs. B made sure to involve both the student and the adult in conversation and generated a sheet of questions to ask each student she goes to visit. It was exciting to see how different students can act outside of school and how they are passionate about the project that they choose.


SAE Visit 2
My second sae visit was so fun and heart warming! We went to visit a new freshmen member, James, at his family's Christmas tree farm. His tree farm is located about half way between Mansfield and Wellsboro. This visit started a little goofy and Mrs. B and myself got ourselves a little lost trying to find it! Luckily, once we finally got there James and his father were still excitedly waiting for us. During the visit, James and his father gave us a whole tour of their tree plots and some history about how they got started and the property. They explained to us many aspects of tree farming such as the types of trees, profits, diseases, pests, and how to maintain trees and the soils. During the visit, we asked James about his role on the farm. He explained to us he does a lot of the trimming and field work. He said some of his goals would be to market better and more as currently they market by word of mouth. It was super heartwarming when his father exclaimed how proud he is of James for really stepping up to plate as he has gotten older and he can see how much he cares about the farm. Visiting James was very special as he is a super enthusiastic, and excited freshmen member of the FFA. He really cares about following in his grandfather's foot steps on the tree farm and in FFA. He has said he wants to be secretary because his grandpa is a past FFA chapter secretary. He also was so excited it brought tears to his eyes when he found out he won a FFA jacket just like his grandfather had. Getting to visit him and his family and encourage him in his sae project really showed how passionate he is and hopefully showed him and his family that Mrs. B and myself hope he stays and active member and we support him!

Overall, visiting these students and their family's for an sae visit was so fun! This is definitely a highlight of being an ag teacher. We get to make these special connections with students and see their passions and hard work.


For saes, Mrs. B grades them by having a project that is relevant to their class. All students enrolled in agriculture courses at Wellsboro are mandated to have an sae. Their requirements each quarter are to have 10 hours within their projects and to include at least 2 pictures of them in or doing their sae.
